Hey folks, we had a small discussion about The Walking Dead going on on the fb link, but I thought people might want to elaborate here a bit more, so …. talk away.

RULES: No comic book spoilers for events that haven’t occured.
Anything that has happened on the show is fair game.
“The show kinda makes you put up with 30 minutes of meh for 10 minutes of awesome.”
See, I feel that was about this last season of Doctor Who (ok, 48 minutes of meh to 2 minutes of awesome). I think the Walking Dead is getting better all the time. The writers are working hard at establishing characters and setting up events. I think a lot of people think it’s going to be wall to wall zombie and get bored when there’s talking.

@admin_rock, I own up to the above meh comment, and by and large I stand by it. But the Daryl falling off the horse episode was awesome.

I get bored when there’s talking, because a lot of the time, it’s terribly boring talk. I’m not looking for endless zombie sequences, but listening Shane and Herschel debate their different views on the apocalypse in one episode and then have Shane argue the exact opposite of his view with his wife an episode or two later is just annoying.

Sorry, I meant Rick… Not Shane.

It looks like the second half of the season will likely start leading up to a showdown between Rick and Shane, and much philosophical side-taking amongst the group. We’ve already had a few big divergences from the comic book plot, and I expect that will continue.
Shane is turning out to be a great character, someone who is fundamentally doing the right thing most of the time, but morally is losing it.

Your no comic book spoilers is fun, seeing as half the most important things from the show never even occurred in the comic.
And seeing as how that’s followed by ‘that hasn’t occurred’ one asks how we even deal with Shane in general…
Anyway, the talk (bad accents and all, though how do the British always seem to do decent southern accents?) is fine. I actually didn’t care that the last 3 episodes had 5 minutes of total Zombie time because the rest was solid.
But I’m all about the show-comic dynamic, (spoiler free, your majesty…) it’s possible that in the next part of season 2, and if they follow the comic at all damn near all of the show from here on out, this show runs the risk of getting very comic-y very fast. The changes they’ve made so far have been great and daring (*coughSHANEcough*) but from here on out things reaaaaaaly could lean toward the unbelievable, which is an aspect of the show I enjoy.

@The M-Daddy, Kirkman’s involvement makes things interesting, this presents a bit of a second chance to edit/correct etc for him, while needing to worry about the direction of the TV side of things. I heard an interview with him where we asked what his biggest regret was comic-wise. His answer focused on not having thought ahead about the challenges his main character faced without the use of (spoiler-free) something.
I suspect that he won’t repeat that in the show.
But my feeling is that the show will continue to do what works best for TV, likely at the expense of some comic book goodness. Will swordy come in to play? Not sure. The big location ? I think so, in some form, maybe not the one we expect. It does create some interesting situations, and especially inter-personal conflicts, which is what the writers will be keying off of. So I think it will.
