As part of our continuing service to you, The Correct, we continually find things for you to be in favour of. In our crazy, fast paced, webmanic society, it’s easy to miss something. Our “A Case For” series presents something (a TV show, film, Book, Band etc) that might deserve a look.

Our first installment “A Case For: Farscape” was presented by one of our regular readers, and we encourage that sort of behaviour. If you have something you’d like to make a case for, write it up and send it to us at admin@thecorrectness.com . See the end of the article for more info.

This week, we bring you A Case for Iron Maiden, by reader El-ahrairah .

1) Respect!

Photobucket

They are the best heavy metal band ever, runner up only to Black Sabbath(KISS, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin are not heavy metal, though they built the foundations). Metallica made wimp music in ’91, and I have no idea what you could call the garbage they churned out on Load and Re-Load, and have sunk to living off of past glories.

2) Solid Line-Up

Photobucket

Three virtuosos in one band. They have the best bassist and drummer, Steve Harris and Nicko McBrain, respictively, and one of the best singers in all of metal, with Bruce Dickinson being second only to Rob Halford.

3) Keep on Keeping On

Photobucket

They still make kick-ass music that tops the charts, even making the Top 10 here in the States with their last two releases. Where Priest, Metallica(who started sucking with that abomination called “The Black Album”), Anthrax, Megadeth, et al., basically living off of past successes. Maiden, however, wins over new fans with the kids of today and keeps the loyalty of their older fans with their new material.

4) Paying it back

Photobucket

They’re great to their fans! I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting them, but everyone who has can’t say enough about how they’re all great guys and appreciative to all of their fans. I used to be a member of their Fan Club for years, and every Christmas they’d send you a Christmas card, signed IN INK!!! The last couple of years they’re using a copied signature, but that’s a great track record of sending out authentic autographs!

5) Eddie!!!

Photobucket

They’re loveable zombie mascot! They were the first with a mascot, being ripped off in that department by Dio, Megadeth, Anthrax, Helloween, Motley Spew (sorry, not a fan), and others. Maiden’s artwork in the days of albums were just beautiful, with Eddie adorning all of their covers and all but a few of their single sleeves.

So there you have it, 5 reasons to check out Iron Maiden.

I think cover art is the one single thing I miss most about albums. Nowadays, even if you do get a CD it’s just as likely to be a picture of the artist looking hot/cool/tough etc. When you were first getting into music, don’t you remember pouring over album covers, studying every nuance? Trying to see if it tied in with the album in some thematic way?

Just me?

You were out touching the opposite sex were you?

Fair enough. Me…not so much

So with that in mind here are of 10 Album covers I remember loving as a pre-teen non female touching nerd.

#10 News of the World – Queen

I was hypnotized by that strangely soulful looking robot and the destruction he caused. What did he do to Freddy? Whatever it was it was with his finger evidently. Freddy got Fingered.

#9 Out of the Blue – ELO

Sorry Boston, there’s only room for 1 spaceship on this list and this one is it. Sure it looks like a “Simon” game, but so what… it’s awesome. I think “Mr. Blue Sky” is on this album too, which ups the awesomeness.

#8) Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd

Simple, classic iconic. Elaborate isn’t always best. (See also, the White album to argue that point)

#7) Killers – Iron Maiden

Eddie…Killing motherfuckers dead since 1979. Most Maiden Album art is awesome, but this one is easily their best

#6 Toys in The Attic – Aerosmith

I like a little “What the Fuck” in my album covers don’t you? I can’t imagine looking at this thing stoned. “Jesus…what is WRONG with that FUCKING BEAR?”

#5 Who’s Next – The Who

There is something ever so Who-like, I think you will agree, about the Boys pissing on something big , ugly and industrial

#4 Kiss Alive

This about sums up the band, and their appeal in one magnificent two ton ball of Gouda. It’s a testament to this cover that when listening to a Kiss song, I always picture them doing the song live, regardless of what the song is about.

#3 Abbey Road – The Beatles

I liked this album cover so much I bought a coffee mug with it on it. It succumbed to a dark fate. but my love of this iconic cover did not.

#2 Led Zeppelin IV – Led Zeppelin

This is also the cover art that gave us the 4 symbols. It was a tough one for Zep, but this is my choice of all their covers (Although Physical Graffiti is also awesome)

And #1

Has to be…

#1) Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band – The Beatles

The “Citizen Kane” of Rock music strikes again. Look at the color…the detail, the weird significant but not significant nods to various friends and influences. Any cover that is sooooo analyzed that stoners talked themselves into thinking one of the Band members was dead has to be #1 on the list.
