I just bought a good quality S. Korean Les Paul "style" guitar for this very reason. Gibson DOESN'T MAKE the guitar I want to buy anymore. Well, not for less than $10,000 from the Custom Shop they don't.
I was really ready to settle for a Gibson LP Studio and even played a few. They sounded MUCH WORSE than my Epiphone LP Studio. I couldn't afford a Standard and they looked like garbage unless you shelled out more than $2750. And for God's sake, have you seen the DUSK TIGER Les Paul?!?? OMG, it's like they let Napoleon's Uncle Rico design it! Kill it with FIRE!
You'd think that since being the only company who can legally write Les Paul on a headstock is pretty much synonymous with a license to print money that they would cater to their loyal customer base, but Gibson's entire business model seems to be built on one concept: "Money Grab". I feel let down.
I guess my Grandpa fought in Korea so that I can wear Nike's, drive Hyundai's and play awesome LP copies. C'est la vie.

Arrgh, I am hearing that from folks, now that I brought it up. It's just disappointing that one of the most expensive guitars out there is also one of the most fussy. I might end up playing about fifty of them before i find one I can buy- Or maybe a PRS.

Everyone I've ever known to have a Les Paul basically gave me the same response as people who own Ford Mustangs: It's a powerful guitar, great sound, but it requires a lot of work, maintenance and tweaks to make it play and sound right. Your experience sounds fairly par for the course.
