Okay, so over at Fark, there’s a thread discussing the merits of Johnny Depp, and an assertion has been made that he’s an attention whore. This seems ludicrous to me, as the guy is known for avoiding attention, and doing all kinds of charitable deeds like visiting Children’s Hospitals as Jack Sparrow.

More than just rehashing that argument, I’m interested in what our readers think in general, so why not start with Johnny Depp?
I’m curious as to what The Correct have to say. (oh, that’s YOU, by the way. I just came up with that.)
Sound off.
I hate hate hate to say it, but I have to agree with you admin_rock. Johnny Depp is notorious for shunning media attention, staying out of headlines and generally keeping his fame and fortune to himself.
The fact that he’s a successful (and quite good) character actor doesn’t make him an attention whore and I think he’s a great example of something most people assume about actors that is complete fallacy.
The general assumption is that actors are immature, irresponsible, promiscuous, out-of-touch, jealous, applause hungry show-offs. I deny it! There ARE elements of the job – late nights, a degree of transitoriness in working relationships – which produce a certain way of life that is unquestionable different from the rest of the population’s. Even so, the whooping-it-up actors are simply a visible, and vocal minority in a population that is generally too poor to do so, or are not that way inclined, preferring to duck out of rehearsal and quietly go home – by no means the least interesting type of actor, let it be said.
Yes, actors are show offs. They show themselves off… that’s the job. But to say an actor is an attention whore because he’s won x number of oscars or because he got paid a lot of money to do yet another terrible pirate film in a franchise you wish were over, has nothing to with the actor in question. It has much more to do with the forum trolls on Fark.
PS: Fark forum trolls are attention whores.

Yep. Well said. The whole “celebrity culture” thing is interesting, in that it’s mostly a media creation, designed to get ratings. But now it’s been in place long enough that some try to play the system to increase their fame.
But to throw Depp into that category seems crazy to me.
Now, was agreeing with me so bad?

Yes.
I’m still trying to drink away my shame.

I think it’s interesting that in the picture you’ve used, everything looks dingy EXCEPT Johnny. In fact, they’ve shopped the heck out of him. It’s an interesting juxtaposition (regardless of whether or not it was intentional).

Not intentional, but good catch. I just grabbed something from GIS, that wasn’t too pirate-ish.

I wouldn’t call him an attention whore, but he is one of those people who attract it anyway. I think he could be Michael Jackson huge if he had that sort of personality, but as it is, he is Johnny Depp huge with seemingly no effort at all on his part. Coolest of the cats.
This movie with Depp and Angelina Jolie has my complete attention!

Took about 8 seconds of googling to find
“In response to a scare within Depp’s own family, in March 2007, he donated $2 million to the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, which treats children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening conditions, as thanks for the treatment his daughter Lily-Rose received at the facility after contracting an E. Coli infection that caused kidney failure.”
yup, he’s okay by me.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone craves attention. I would have trouble thinking of someone who wouldn’t appreciate someone listening to what they had to say, or watch what they can do. Being a whore for attention would to try and continually draw attention, and those people may sacrafice their dignity, personal life, and morals to get that. As far as I can tell, Johnny Depp hasn’t done that. Anyone who made a sextape that somehow managed to escape their bedroom and circulate around the internet…attention whore. Someone who shaves their head as part of a “breakdown”…attention whore. Someone who goes on a reality show…attention whore. And someone who tries to generate contravorsy over an actor without relavence…farking attention whore.

Depp seems pretty low on the attention whore scale to me. Not quite Harrison Ford, Art Garfunkel or “That other guy from that movie I saw once” kinda low, but nearly that low.
He definitely is not in the Paris Hilton, Tommy Lee, Madonna “Illuminati” of attention whores
Tomass(Quote) (Reply)
The confusion is this:
The characters he plays seem like attention whores themselves. Jack Sparrow. Willy Wonka, etc…
People project the obnoxious nature of his acting onto his personal life. Yes, I said obnoxious. Jack Sparrow is annoying, and Gene Wilder probably cries himself to sleep every night after seeing our beloved Willy Wonka get stripped of all his creepy subtlety.
Subtlety…Not Depp’s strong suit.
But I don’t put that on him outside of his movies, and I think that’s why people have this argument. Personally, he does seem like a nice enough guy, and I’ll always remember him as my favorite McQuaid brother on Jump Street.
