Admin_Rock Roundup – Sept 12,2012

Back with Admin_Rock’s weekly look at what’s hot, and what’s cool, (at least in his world.)

Photobucket

Hey folks, normally this happens on Monday, but I was busy earlier this week, better late than never.

FILM

Not much to report on filmwise, though I did rewatch a few things over the last few weeks. The Bourne Identity came on, and I sat, watched, became engrossed, and realized how much I really like that movie/series. So good. This, along with my Bond marathon, brought me to the conclusion that we really don’t need any more Bond films, as Bourne pretty much has it covered.

Also rewatched the first two Nolan Batman films. If you’re coming to Batman Begins right off of seeing Dark Knight Rises, it’s obvious that Nolan has kept to his themes, reworked elements of the previous films in, and stayed faithful to the story. Begins was better than I remember it, one of the few movies where the villain is the least interesting thing in the film. When I got to Dark Knight, My first thought was “I really wish they had kept Katie Holmes, rather than Maggie Gyllenhall. I LIKED the character in the first movie, could not care less about her in the second (which is a shame, because she’s pretty damn important in all three films).

MUSIC

Nothing new in the music world, been using the Songza app a lot in the morning. It’s ….okay. It’s not brilliant, though it has the potential to be. Essentially it’s a collection of shared playlists, which you can skip through in a limited fashion.

TV

Rewatching “The Newsroom” with my wife. Fun show, can only get better. Who knew that Olivan Munn would become so likeable? Also rewatching “Arrested Development”. It;s even better when you only half pay attention to the screen. Allows you to hear the jokes. Funny stuff.

BOOKS

Finished “Ready Player One”. It was a decent read. First half I was constantly asking myself “Am I just reading a pale imitation of ‘Snow Crash’? Once I decided I was, that nagging went away. It was a fun ride, and the author shows promise for the future. A bit simple, a bit lacking in tension or suspense, but worth checking out. (Thanks M-Daddy).

i picked up a 32G Hp Touchpad last week, and managed to load Android on it, giving me a pretty banging tablet for $200. loaded the kindle app, and started reading Stephen King’s 11/22/1963. It’s a great read so far. (Man finds door to past (1958), but past resets everytime it is used again. Decides to try to save JFK.)

COMICS

Hmmm…. trying to remember what I’ve read and liked in the last two weeks… Avengers Vs. X-Men went from “okay” to “this is just fucking awful”. The new Rocketeer Mini is great (though I’ll buy anything with The Rocketeer in it.) The DC Zero issues are starting to hit. So far there have been some interesting stories, and few not so great ones. Green Lantern is heading in to yet another “WAR of the RAINBOW” type thing. I think I might be done with him for a while.

Picked up the Absolute Edition of “Dark Knight Returns”. Such a great book, so finely tuned and crafted. I’m basically studying it at this point.

LEGO

Got two pieces installed at the art gallery, and brought a bunch of on hand things to Maker Faire here in town. Time to take a breather and prep for a couple of big projects in the fall/winter.

Till next week, share your likes and dislikes, recommend things and such.
