Back with Admin_Rock’s weekly look at what’s hot, and what’s cool, (at least in his world.)

FILM

As long-time readers of the Roundup (stretching back two weeks) will know, I’ve been working my way through the Bond films. This week brings us up to ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. The Roger Moore era of Bond absolutely reeks of campiness. It’s just…. not good. ‘Live and Let Die’ literally bored me to sleep this time through, and while I’ve always loved ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’, it has a really long dull stretch in the middle. The introduction of the Jaws character in the last few films hasn’t helped matters. It’s indicative of everything that went wrong with the series. Too campy, too much “trying to be hip”, too formula. Moonraker is up next…shudder.

Also watched ‘Moneyball’, which, as a movie about statistics and their usage is mildly interesting at best. As a dramatic film, fucking horrible. What a stinker. There’s exactly one interesting moment, and it comes with about 3 minutes left in the movie. It’s a film clip that one character shows another as validation for his work. Skip this and watch that last three minutes, trust me on this one.

Also watched ‘The Hangover 2’: More Hangovery. Nuff said.

MUSIC

Still lost in the 60’s with the Beach Boys. I blame the summer and my impending return to San Diego. I did catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show this week, and it was pretty great. The Beastie Boys induction was bittersweet and awesome, and the RHCP segment was great.

TV

Not much happening TVwise, I blame the summer. I did start watching ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, but, all reality TV complaints aside, it’s just too dull this year. I can’t be bothered. Also caught up on ‘Veep’, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’s new show. Pretty funny, and interesting. Also, ‘The Newsroom’, which was better than I expected, though I might be tired of the much-lauded “Sorkin-speak’, which (at least in the first episode) has become cliche, and the unrealistic nature of it is starting to stick out more. Also not sure if Sam Waterston’s character is right. I think not, so far.

BOOKS

No book reading this week.

COMICS

Started ‘Starman’ this week. Not sold yet, but perhaps it picks up. ‘Atomic Robo’ was a lot of fun, really enjoyed that. FF and Fantastic Four keep smacking me over the head with the impending departure of Hickman, who is making it near-impossible to follow. So good.

LEGO

Built two LOTR sets this week, and a recycling truck for my 3 year old, who is really in to Toy Story 3 right now. The LOTR sets I built outside, which was different, not entirely advisable, as I worried a lot about dropping pieces, etc. The Ring from the LOTR sets is fun, and shiny. I gave one to RRT, which might the geekiest gift I’ve ever given him.

Enough for this week. Ponder away on my taste, tell me about your own. What SHOULD I be watching, listening to, consuming????
