Admin Rock Roundup – January 23, 2013

Back with Admin_Rock’s weekly look at what’s hot, and what’s cool, (at least in his world.)

Photobucket

It’s been months since I shared what I watch and hear and make. You all must be so stressed. Fear not, I bring you the updated lists.

FILM

Watched Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Mrs. Admin Rock the other night. It was just as wonderful the second time. If you like old people, or India, or any combination thereof, you’ll enjoy this film. You might confuse it with Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, but here’s a simple way to tell them apart: BEMH is actually about something, and doesn’t spend most of its time wistfully staring with vaseline on the lens. Okay, I haven’t actually seen Moonrise Kingdom, because I just don’t get Wes Anderson. Been burned too many times. I’m sure he’s all talented and awesome, but it’s like that movie that all your friends rave about, then you go see it, and it sucks donkey balls. It’s exactly like that. Donkeyballful. Donkeybawful.

On a recent flight, I watched both The Bourne Legacy, and Taken 2, without sound. Rather, they were on, and I glanced up occasionally, and wondered if any part of these films didn’t involve a chase, or standoff of some kind. I feel like I made the wiser choice.

MUSIC

Late to the game, but I picked up Phrenology by The Roots. It’s really, really good. If you don’t like rap, you won’t like this, but it’s miles above most of the crap out there. I’m certain I’m getting old, because I look at the Grammy awards with confusion and mild concern. I don’t know what a Nicky Minaj is, but I’m pretty sure I’m better off that way. I do like Fun, as an offshoot of The Format, whom I also enjoy. The current Fun album is maybe not as good as “Aim and Ignite”, but they both have a lot of decent tracks.

TV

Started using Plex, a media server program that allows you to stream your content to anywhere you like, and also works with my WDTVLive set up. Been revisiting Justified (seen the first two seasons) and Psych. Psych is like that awesome friend that you should hang out with more, but always forget until the next time you see him. Networkwise, there’s a bit of a lull right now. Dexter is done for the season (it was decent, but getting long in the tooth), Walking Dead as well (nicely done!) and most of my other favorites have yet to kick off for the year. Last Resort was cancelled early, which makes me sad, but I still have a few episodes to burn through.

BOOKS

Reading a biography of Brian Wilson right now. Genius. Screwed Up. Rich. No one to tell him no. Pretty common Hollywood story. I think there’s a career for me as a “No” man. Celebrities can hire me to tell them when they’re going too far. That way they can have fun, but not lose it all. It’s like a designated driver for your career.

COMICS

Comics have been a bit on the back burner lately. I like the new Avengers stuff from Jonathan Hickman, and All New X-Men is interesting thus far. Scott Snyder has been killing it on the Batman book, and the current event “Death of the Family” is great.

LEGO

5 commissions over the holidays, one more to finish up by next week. Two major grant projects to get done by the end of March, a local show in early Feb to prep for, then Comic Expo in April, and hopefully SDCC down the line. My hobby is becoming a full time job, which my full time job looks at and scoffs at.

Till next week, share your likes and dislikes, recommend things and such.
